Knockout Cup Final

Bangor Tigers vrs Bangor A

Bangor Tigers vrs Bangor A

Can you believe it the Knockout Cup is over for another year! While the Men’s teams outperformed their recent performances with all but the Senior Men making it to the semi-finals, yet again it was the Ladies uploading the honour of the Club and ensuring we had two representatives in the finals. The only fly in the ointment was that they had to play each other in the Intermediate section.

Most would have expected our Intermediate A team to get to the finals but few people outside of Bangor LTC would have predicted a final berth for our newly and controversially promoted Intermediate B team (aka The Tigers). The run to the final for both teams wasn’t easy and each tie was closely fought, especially the two semi-finals!

The Final

The B Team (hereafter called the ‘Tigers’) got off to an absolutely flying start in the first round of matches. Kathryn Thomson and Lesley McQuiston (Tigers) blitzed Alison Nesbitt and Joanne McNaney (A Team) 6:1 in the first set and were on the brink of a stunning victory having powered on to 5:2 in the second set. It was at this point that the A team decided that it might be a good idea to start playing a bit of tennis and the Tigers turned from growling predators to fluffy kittens and their lead began to slip away. The A team eventually took the second set 7:5 and held on to the initiative to take the third set and claim the win.

On the other court Jenny Fletcher and Ann Darragh (A Team) were dealing with the other two tigers, Carol Stevenson and Janet Mullan. It was a good performance from all four players with the B team coming out on top in straight sets.

Reverse Doubles

Having lost the first two matches the Tigers were really up against it and knew that they had to win the reverse doubles in straight sets to win the final and the A Team knew that all they needed was two sets to be sure of a win.

Carol and Janet made a great start winning the first set in their match against Alison and Joanne to give the Tigers hope that the big comeback might be on. Kathryn and Lesley played some excellent tennis and were very close to winning the first set in their match against Jenny and Anne but couldn’t quite find their earlier form. Over on the other court the A team had clawed their way back in to the match and leveled it at one set all and having the two sets they needed had won the final. After that Carol and Janet were just playing for pride and took the third set 7:5 for a well earned victory for the Tigers

The Captains

A Team Captain Alison Nesbitt “This is a tough competition but when you have to play against your own Club it’s doubly hard. But the best thing about this victory is that no one person made it happen it was a real team effort…”

Tiger TearsB (Tigers) Team Captain Kathryn Thomson said after the match “We did not win but we are not too disappointed as we gave everything and I’m very proud of my team.”

And the Club are proud of both teams for all of their efforts.
